Where to See Christmas Lights in Whatcom County: Bellingham, Lynden and Ferndale

Whatcom County does holiday lights in two modes: organized events downtown and in Lynden, and residential streets where neighbors have been outdoing each other for decades. A good evening usually includes both.

Events and drive-thru displays

Lights of Lynden

Northwest Washington Fairgrounds, Lynden

A drive-thru display on the fairgrounds. Stay in the car, which in a Whatcom December is the entire appeal. Typically the biggest single organized display in the county.

Fairhaven Winterfest

Historic Fairhaven, Bellingham

Fairhaven's brick storefronts and street trees lit for the season, with events running through December. The best walking option in the county, and the most photogenic.

Downtown Bellingham tree lighting

Railroad Avenue, Bellingham

The official start of the season downtown. One evening, usually late November, and downtown stays lit afterward.

The residential drive

James Street Estates

James Street area, Bellingham

A longstanding residential tradition where a cluster of homes go up together. Worth a slow lap. Go on a weeknight if you can; weekends back up.

Beyond that, the older streets around Columbia and Cornwall Park in Bellingham reward a wander, and Lynden and Ferndale both have pockets of farmhouses that light the whole roofline, which reads spectacularly across open ground.

What the good ones have in common

Drive these and a pattern emerges. The houses that stop traffic are almost never the ones with the most stuff in the yard. They are the ones where the roofline is traced cleanly in one consistent warm white, so the eye reads the shape of the house from a block away.

  • One bulb type and one color temperature across the whole roof.
  • Every roofline followed, including the peaks, not just the easy front eave.
  • Even spacing, no sag between clips.
  • Nothing dark. One failed section undoes the whole effect.

That last one is why so many displays look great on December 1 and rough by the 20th.
