Warm White vs. Multicolor: Choosing Your Look

This is the only real design decision most homeowners make, and it changes the whole character of the house. Both answers are correct; they are just answering different questions.

Warm white

Warm white C9 at around 2700K reads as architecture. It is also the simplest palette to plan around when you are working out how many bulbs your roofline needs. It traces the shape of the house, photographs beautifully, and looks expensive because the eye reads the line of the roof rather than the individual bulbs. It also works with any exterior color and does not fight your landscape lighting.

It is what we install on every package, and it is what nearly every high-end residential install in the region uses.

Multicolor

Color reads as celebration. Either way the power bill barely moves: see what it costs to run Christmas lights. It is nostalgic, it is louder from the street, and on the right house, particularly with kids in it, it is more fun. The risk is that mixed color on a complicated roofline can read busy, and cheap multicolor sets with mismatched color temperatures look worse than either pure option.

How to decide

That last row is the answer for most people, and it is the one professional designers reach for: keep the architecture clean in warm white, and put the color at ground level where it reads as decoration rather than as the building.

The one mistake to avoid

Do not mix bulb types or color temperatures on the same run. If you want a different color scheme every season without rebuying, that is the argument for a permanent RGB system. Two slightly different whites next to each other look like a mistake, because it is one. If you are adding to an existing display, match the bulb exactly or replace the whole run.
